Capstone Turbine, E-Finity and Phoenix Contact Celebrate Earth Day With a Wire Cutting Ceremony at a Newly Installed C1000 CCHP Installation in Pennsylvania

CHATSWORTH, Calif., April 23, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Capstone Turbine Corporation (www.capstoneturbine.com) (Nasdaq:CPST), the world's leading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, celebrated Earth Day by participating in a wire cutting ceremony in commemoration of Phoenix Contact's newly installed 1000kW combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) system by symbolically disconnecting the facility from the electric grid.

Phoenix Contact manufactures industrial automation, interconnection, and interface solutions. It offers terminal blocks, which include relays, signal conditioning, controller system cabling, surge suppression, transition interfaces, and custom interfaces; printed circuit board terminal blocks; controllers and IO; as well as industrial plug connectors.

The CCHP system located at Phoenix Contact's United States headquarters in Lower Swatara Township in Pennsylvania is composed of a Capstone C1000 power package, a 300-ton exhaust-fired absorption chiller, and a 5,000-BTU heat exchanger. The turbines are driven by the thermal dynamics of the facility and, as they generate electricity, vent exhaust heat through the building's absorption chiller or the heat exchanger to regulate the temperatures of the building's hot and chilled water. The system will generate enough electricity to power the company's facility 65 percent of the time and is capable of generating up to 1MW of electricity.

"I am very pleased to see that the commercial/industrial marketplace is recognizing the value that can be gained from utilizing low-cost, abundant shale gas for generating reliable onsite combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) with Capstone turbines," said Jeff Beiter, Managing Partner for E-Finity Distributed Generation, the exclusive Mid-Atlantic distributor for Capstone Turbine Corporation and the system supplier for the project.

Representatives, leaders, and executives from Phoenix Contact, Capstone Turbine Corporation and E-Finity Distributed Generation, along with members of the local community, were on hand to participate in the ceremonial wire cutting and observe what a system of this caliber means for the company, as well as the environment.

Doug Ferguson, Vice President, Americas Operations Services of Phoenix Contact, remarked on the benefits of the system by saying, "As a clean, alternative energy source, the CCHP system provides two additional key benefits: the system is expected to provide us an estimated annual savings of over $300,000 per year; and this additional electricity generation source provides a redundant source of electricity, which will allow our facility to operate in the event that either PP&L or our CCHP system goes out of service."

The system is composed of Phoenix Contact's products, as well. The control cabinets function in part with Phoenix Contact's Valueline industrial PCs, Ethernet switches, Visu+ software, I/O, relays, power supplies, and surge protection, among others.

The installation of the CCHP system comes near the end of a major expansion and renovation of Phoenix Contact's United States headquarters. The construction added over 125,000 square feet, making the total square footage of the facility nearly 360,000 square feet and doubling the manufacturing footprint in the U.S. The expansion also benefits the local workforce, by adding an additional 50,000-square-feet of office space.
